Words & their sources.
Quotdle combines a curated daily collection with an imported practice collection. All game data is bundled locally; playing does not query a third-party API.
Quotable
The open-source Quotable data project supplies our imported quotations and initial author list. Snapshot: 20037e8. Its package.json declares MIT. The associated Quotable project’s MIT notice is preserved below.
We filtered for short quotes, removed duplicates and selected known attribution problems, and matched people to biography records. Imported quote attributions have not all been independently verified; their reveals link back to the original collection. The dataset’s software license does not change the rights in individual quotations.
Wikidata & Wikipedia
Names, aliases, descriptions, and biography facts come from Wikidata contributors. Structured Wikidata data is available under CC0. Each person’s feedback row links their entity. The repository preserves entity IDs, the source snapshot, and checksums.
We simplify primary roles and selected historical country labels for gameplay. Missing or conflicting facts remain unknown. Living status uses Wikipedia’s Living people category as supporting evidence at the snapshot date. These are cached facts, not a live biography service.
The raw Quotable author download includes Wikipedia-derived biographies, credited to Wikipedia contributors at the article links preserved in each source record. Wikipedia text is available under CC BY-SA 4.0 and applicable additional terms; those biographies are not displayed in the game. The brief descriptions displayed in guess rows are from Wikidata.
Curated quotations
The 52 daily quotes have individual work titles, context notes, and source links in their answer reveals. Thirty-two additions were checked against the source texts hosted by Project Gutenberg. Punctuation, capitalization, and line breaks may be lightly normalized. Translated works identify the edition through the source link. All quotations retain their respective original rights.
